She stands on the edge of the motorway as the rain falls from the monotonously grey sky. She doesn't seem to notice the rain or her soaked white dress as she stares at the traffic passing her by in the northbound lanes, seemingly oblivious to the spray thrown up in their wake. No one seems to notice her as someone would have surely stopped to pick her up long ago if they had. She shifts slightly, her bare feet squelching in the mud as she slowly raises her hand out to the passing cars. A Handful Of Dusty RosesA Handful of Dusty Roses.
Roses grew along the side of the road all through that summer when I was young. We used to flick their heads off with sticks and run when the gardener would shout at us. It's funny to think about it now but as kids we never thought that roses were anything but a plant. We never saw them, or any flower really, as anything particularly special until we grew up. They were always there and they were always that dusky red colour that looked a little like the dried blood caked under our noses after the school bully caught us. My Drunken Lover.My Drunken Lover.
She sits slumped against the wall, unconscious and dripping in her own vomit. All I can do is shake my head and clean her up again. Every time I swear it will be the last time and then I clean her up again the next time and the time after that, reaffirming that once again it's the last time. I never learn though, never just walk away. This time I clean her up and get her into the shower, still unconscious and snoring. She doesn't even wake up when I put her under the running water, soaking off the worst of the masticated and regurgitated kebab before running the soap over her clothes. I have just one question: should book chapters run in excess of 20,000 words?
Answer: probably not. Crap.

I finally got around to actually doing some serious editing on my book and the first chapter went from a moderate 8,500ish to in excess of 22,000 words. I think I went a little overboard with it but one of the big things was using the large amount of pure dialogue and actually putting in some descriptive. It was one of the things I was never happy with was how it was almost all dialogue with not much else to fill it out and now I've gone and done that, but the length has gone stupid.

Don't get me wrong, I'm actually quite happy with it now and I'm at a stage with it where I think it makes more sense than it used to and flows much better. It's looking much more rounded and finished.

Only problem now is to put that wonderful editing to the rest of the book. All 23 more chapters of it. Oh dear.....

I have the feeling that I've gone and put my foot in things here as the original cut had about 210-220,000 words in 24 roughly even sized chapters. If I'm to extrapolate what I've done with the first one, the end result is looking to be about 540,000 all up (please don't tell me my maths is bad unless you can tell me it will be less than that), which is a little long for a single book. Can anyone say TRILOGY?

The other bad thing is with a couple of chapters I sort of glossed over things that I thought I would get back to before now so there is looking to be some serious rewriting to do as well as the editing. This project just keeps snowballing on me. And on top of that a couple of ideas have spun off the main line of this story and have become entities of their own. Those are projected to be serious stories of their own with the same possible length. As such I'm taking only the best two ideas (which are also the two farthest along and most detailed) to continue on with. The rest can get amalgamated and threaded into the others.

I'm having to continually revise my estimates up. Conceivably this whole thing will go in excess of the big M. Yes, over 1,000,000 words. I'm hoping that it won't be that big, though I have contingency plans for such a thing and early estimates for the three parts together are for 1,500,000 all up.

My only comment to all this...I'm crazy and have a thing for self punishment.
